Cape Verde become smallest African country to qualify for the World Cup

In a historic moment for African football, Cape Verde has officially qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time ever, becoming the 22nd team to secure its place in the global tournament and the sixth representative from Africa.

The island nation, located off the west coast of Africa, has achieved what many once believed was impossible beating footballing giants and cementing its name in world football history.

The islanders booked their historic spot in style, with a thumping 3-0 home win over Eswatini that left no doubt about their place at the top of Group D. The emphatic result put daylight between them and the chasing pack, including African heavyweights like Cameroon and Angola.

Topping Group D with a stunning 23 points, Cabo Verde finished ahead of Cameroon, a team with the most World Cup appearances among African nations. Cameroon, forced into the playoffs as one of the best second-place teams, couldn’t stop the meteoric rise of the Blue Sharks.

This achievement signals not only a footballing triumph but also a significant moment of national pride for a country with a population of just over 500,000, making it the second-smallest nation to ever qualify for a FIFA World Cup, only behind Iceland.

Cabo Verde’s qualification underscores the growing parity in international football. With talent emerging from all corners of the globe, this World Cup is shaping up to be one of the most diverse and unpredictable yet. Their journey is a testament to resilience, smart development, and the power of dreaming big.

Cape Verde will be the second smallest nation to ever feature in the competition (after Iceland in 2018).

As fans across the archipelago celebrate, the world turns its eyes toward this inspirational underdog story. The Blue Sharks are ready to swim with the giants on football’s biggest stage.
