Xabi Alonso Leaves Real Madrid by Mutual Agreement

Real Madrid have confirmed the departure of head coach Xabi Alonso, with both parties agreeing to end their working relationship following a review of the team’s performances during the 2025–26 season.

The decision was reached after a period of inconsistent results, which culminated in a 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The club announced the separation on Monday, describing it as a mutual agreement after discussions between Alonso and the club’s leadership.

Alonso had been appointed as head coach on June 1, 2025, signing a contract that was due to run until June 30, 2028. The former midfielder, who is regarded as a club legend, was tasked with leading a new era at the Santiago Bernabéu following his success in club management prior to his arrival.

During his time in charge, Alonso led Real Madrid in 34 competitive matches across all competitions, recording 20 wins, three draws and five defeats. In La Liga, his side won 14 of 19 matches, drawing three and losing two, while in the UEFA Champions League, Madrid won four of six games under his leadership.

Despite a competitive record, the lack of silverware and recent setbacks in high-profile fixtures weighed heavily on his position. The Super Cup defeat to Barcelona proved decisive, prompting the club to reassess its direction.

In a statement, Real Madrid thanked Alonso and his coaching staff for their dedication and professionalism, praising his contribution and reaffirming his status as one of the club’s great figures. The club added that Alonso will always be held in high regard by Real Madrid supporters.

The Spanish giants have since appointed former defender Álvaro Arbeloa as the new head coach, as they look to stabilise results and continue their pursuit of success in La Liga, the Champions League and domestic competitions.
