Ghana Crash Out of U20 World Cup Race After AFCON Defeat to Egypt

Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the FIFA U20 World Cup came to a heartbreaking end after a penalty shootout defeat to host nation Egypt in the quarter-finals of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Satellites knew that victory would secure them automatic qualification for the U20 World Cup, but Egypt dashed those hopes after edging the contest on penalties following a dramatic encounter.

The match began cautiously, with both sides adopting a measured approach in the opening stages as they sought to avoid early mistakes. However, Egypt gradually increased the tempo and were rewarded in the 19th minute.

A long ball from Ahmed Sharaf caused confusion in the Ghana defence, with captain Ofori McCarthy and defender Gidios Aseako failing to deal with the danger. Momen Sherif capitalised on the error, pouncing on the loose ball to slot home and give the hosts the lead.

Egypt struck again eight minutes later in similar fashion. Abdullah Bostangy’s ball released Sherif, who outpaced Aseako, rounded him, and finished into an empty net to put Egypt 2–0 ahead.

Ghana found a lifeline before the break when Aziz Issah fired a long-range effort that the Egyptian goalkeeper misjudged, allowing the ball to creep into the net and reduce the deficit.

Buoyed by the goal, Ghana returned for the second half with renewed confidence and were soon level. The Black Satellites were awarded a penalty, which Hakim Sulemana calmly converted to make it 2–2 and swing the momentum in their favour.

Despite both teams pushing for a winner, neither side could find the decisive goal during regulation time or extra time, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.

In the tense shootout, Egypt held their nerve to claim a narrow 5–4 victory, sealing their place in the semi-finals of the tournament.

The win not only sends Egypt into the last four of the U20 AFCON but also guarantees the hosts qualification for the FIFA U20 World Cup. For Ghana, however, the defeat brings a painful end to their World Cup dream despite a spirited comeback performance.
