Akufo-Addo Donates GHC1 Million to Medeama Ahead of CAF Champions League Campaign

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has pledged GHC1 million to support Tarkwa-based Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC as they prepare for their maiden CAF Champions League campaign. The donation was announced during the team’s visit to the Jubilee House on Wednesday, where the champions presented the Premier League trophy to the president ahead of their opening fixture against Nigeria’s Remo Stars on August 18 at the Cape Coast Stadium.

Medeama were accompanied by Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Mines and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, alongside chiefs from the Apinto Traditional Council, club board chairman Dr. Tony Aubynn, head coach Evans Augustine Adotey, and members of the management and technical team.

Addressing the club, Akufo-Addo stated: “I will try to provide a million Ghana Cedis to help you in the CAF campaign. The deputy minister insists that if I’m in Ghana on the 20th, I should come to Cape Coast. I’ll see. We’ll do our best.”

Medeama earned the right to represent Ghana after clinching the 2022/23 Premier League title, overtaking Aduana Stars in the final stages of the season. Akufo-Addo congratulated the team, noting, “It’s been 47 years since a team from the Western Region won the cup. This is great. You’ve done a great job. Congratulations.”

Following the first leg against Remo Stars, Medeama will travel to Nigeria for the second leg on August 25. The winner of the tie will advance to face Guinean giants Horoya AC, with a coveted group stage spot at stake.

Medeama’s last appearance in CAF inter-club competitions was in 2016 when they defeated South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns to reach the group stage. The upcoming campaign marks a historic return for the Tarkwa-based side to African continental football.
