Medeama SC’s maiden CAF Champions League campaign came to a disappointing end on Friday evening after a comprehensive 3-0 defeat to CR Belouizdad in their final Group D fixture in Algeria.
Although both sides had already been eliminated before kickoff, the Algerian champions produced a spirited display in front of their home supporters, determined to avenge their earlier loss to the Ghanaian side.
CR Belouizdad dominated proceedings from the outset and broke the deadlock in the 27th minute through midfielder Abdelraouf Benguit, who capitalised on sustained pressure to put the hosts ahead. The momentum remained with the home side as Cameroonian striker Leonel Wamba doubled the advantage, leaving Medeama struggling to find a response.
Gambian forward Lamin Jallow later added a third to complete a convincing victory and ensure Belouizdad ended their continental campaign on a positive note.
Elsewhere in the group, record champions Al Ahly edged Young Africans 1-0, a result that confirmed both sides’ progression to the quarter-finals.
While the defeat marked the end of the road for Medeama, the Tarkwa-based club can still reflect positively on a historic debut in Africa’s elite club competition. Their journey to the group stage was highlighted by impressive performances in the preliminary rounds, including a memorable victory over Guinean heavyweights AC Horoya, underlining Medeama’s growing presence on the continental stage despite an early exit.
