CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup draws reveal clubs’ paths

The draws for the 2024/25 CAF inter-club competitions were held in Cairo, Egypt, unveiling the group-stage matchups for the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.
Reigning CAF Champions League holders Al Ahly headline the continent’s elite competition once again, while Zamalek enter the Confederation Cup as defending champions after edging RS Berkane 2-2 on aggregate to lift the trophy last season. The two Egyptian giants have already renewed their rivalry this season, with Zamalek defeating Al Ahly in the CAF Super Cup to officially usher in the new continental campaign.
Following the conclusion of the draw, the 16 qualified teams in each competition were placed into four groups, setting the stage for a highly competitive group phase.
In the CAF Champions League, Group A features five-time champions TP Mazembe alongside Young Africans of Tanzania, Sudanese side Al Hilal, and Algeria’s MC Alger. Group B presents a heavyweight clash as Mamelodi Sundowns face Morocco’s Raja Casablanca and AS FAR, as well as DR Congo’s AS Maniema Union.
Group C sees holders Al Ahly drawn against Algeria’s CR Belouizdad, South Africa’s Orlando Pirates, and Côte d’Ivoire’s Stade d’Abidjan. Meanwhile, Group D is made up of Esperance Tunis, Egypt’s Pyramids FC, Angola’s Sagrada Esperança, and Mali’s Djoliba AC.
In the CAF Confederation Cup, Group A consists of Tanzania’s Simba SC, Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien, Algeria’s CS Constantine, and Angola’s FC Bravos do Maquis. Group B includes former champions RS Berkane, Stade Malien, Stellenbosch FC of South Africa, and CD Lunda-Sul.
Group C pairs USM Alger with ASEC Mimosas, ASC Jaraaf, and Orapa United, while defending champions Zamalek anchor Group D alongside compatriots Al Masry SC, Nigeria’s Enyimba FC, and Mozambique’s Black Bulls.
The group stage matches for both competitions are scheduled to kick off in November, with clubs set to battle for a place in the knockout rounds as Africa’s premier inter-club tournaments gather momentum.
