“Real Madrid Edge Atletico Madrid to Take Slim Champions League Advantage”

Real Madrid secured a slender edge in their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie against Atletico Madrid, edging a hard-fought 2–1 victory in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu. The result sets up a mouth-watering return fixture at the Wanda Metropolitano, where Atletico will aim to overturn the deficit and book a place in the quarter-finals.

The hosts made a dream start, drawing first blood inside the opening four minutes through Rodrygo Goes. The Brazilian winger cut in from the right flank, left Clément Lenglet trailing in his wake, and unleashed a precise strike that flew beyond Jan Oblak, giving the Atletico goalkeeper no chance.

Shaken by the early setback, Atletico gradually grew into the contest and found their response through Julián Álvarez. The Argentine forward produced a moment of brilliance to level the tie, collecting the ball on the left wing, beating his marker with a clever step-over, and rifling an unstoppable effort off the post and into the far corner.

The goal was Álvarez’s seventh in nine Champions League appearances this season and his sixth in his last six games in all competitions, underlining his importance to Diego Simeone’s side.

True to their rich European pedigree, the 15-time Champions League winners regained control of the tie through Brahim Díaz. The former Manchester City man showcased his quality with a decisive strike, spinning away from José María Giménez before calmly guiding a low shot across Oblak and into the far corner to restore Real Madrid’s lead.

With the score at 2–1, Atletico pushed for another equaliser. Simeone introduced attacking options including Alexander Sørloth and Ángel Correa, but Real Madrid remained resolute, managing the game expertly to preserve their narrow advantage.

The victory marked Real Madrid’s first derby win in regular time in nine attempts, having previously recorded one defeat and seven draws in recent meetings.

While the advantage belongs to Carlo Ancelotti’s men, the tie remains finely balanced. Atletico will take confidence from their home support in the second leg, knowing a win would keep their Champions League hopes alive. Real Madrid, meanwhile, are aware that even a draw at the Wanda Metropolitano would be enough to see them progress.

The stage is set for another intense chapter in the Madrid derby on Europe’s grandest stage.
