Inaki Williams’ last-minute strike gives Ghana opening win over Madagascar in World Cup qualifier.

Inaki Williams’ Late Header Secures Ghana a 1-0 Win Over Madagascar in World Cup Qualifier Opener

Inaki Williams marked a historic moment for Ghana by scoring his first-ever goal for the national team, ensuring a 1-0 victory over Madagascar in Kumasi and giving the Black Stars a positive start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Athletic Bilbao striker struck in the dying moments of added time, heading home a precise cross from Gideon Mensah after being left unmarked, rescuing Ghana from a potential 0-0 draw.

Ghana came into the match under pressure after recent defeats to Mexico and the United States in October, and the team’s performance in the first half reflected those concerns. Despite holding the advantage in FIFA rankings, Madagascar sits 48 places below Ghana, the Black Stars struggled to break down a determined Malagasy side, who dominated early play and created several chances.

Goalkeeper Richard Ofori, preferred over Lawrence Ati-Zigi, made a crucial save to keep Ghana in the game, while West Ham star Mohammed Kudus orchestrated several attacking moves. However, the first half ended goalless.

The second half saw tactical adjustments from coach Chris Hughton, including the introduction of Majeed Ashimeru and Denis Odoi, which significantly improved Ghana’s attacking threat. Ashimeru’s dynamic runs and precise passing unsettled Madagascar, while Williams, shifted to centre-forward after Antoine Semenyo’s substitution, became increasingly dangerous.

Despite multiple close attempts, Williams was initially denied by Malagasy goalkeeper Melvin Adrien, who also thwarted shots from Kudus and Nuamah. Finally, in the 95th minute, Williams connected with Mensah’s cross to score the decisive header. Madagascar’s defensive lapse in leaving him unmarked proved costly, leaving their coach Romuald Felix Rakotondrabe visibly disappointed.

Williams’ emotional celebration reflected the significance of his first goal for Ghana, capping a strong individual performance. The victory not only salvaged a challenging game but also lifted the Black Stars’ spirits as they prepare to face Comoros in Moroni on Tuesday in their second group stage match.

This result gives Ghana three vital points, keeping their hopes alive in Group I, where Mali currently leads with four points after a draw with the Central African Republic.
