Stephen Appiah: I Was Fortunate to Be Part of Ghana’s 2010 World Cup Squad

Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has openly admitted that he was fortunate to be included in Ghana’s squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, highlighting the intense competition for places following the emergence of a talented new generation of players.
Speaking in an interview with Sport Blitz 360, Appiah reflected on the period after Ghana’s historic 2009 U-20 World Cup triumph, which ushered in a wave of young, highly competitive talents pushing for places in the senior national team.
“In 2010, I was lucky to be part of the team. If Agyemang-Badu was okay, maybe I wouldn’t have been part of the 2010 World Cup, which would have been difficult,” Appiah revealed.
The former skipper stressed the importance of striking the right balance between experience and youth in the national team setup. According to him, senior players must be made to understand their evolving roles, especially when younger talents are excelling.
“You can have senior players in the team, and if you let them understand that there are good players coming through, they may get 20 or 10 minutes depending on how they train,” he explained.
Appiah also highlighted the value experienced players bring beyond minutes on the pitch, particularly in maintaining discipline and professionalism within the camp.
“When some players see senior players in camp, they won’t even think of misbehaving. So we have to know how to handle senior players in the national team,” he added.
Ghana’s 2010 World Cup campaign remains one of the nation’s proudest football moments, as the Black Stars reached the quarter-finals for the first time in history. Their memorable run included a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over the United States in the round of 16, with Appiah’s leadership and experience playing a key role throughout the tournament.
His comments come amid renewed debate over squad selection following the announcement of the latest Black Stars team, which excluded several notable names. The situation has reignited discussions about how best to blend youthful energy with seasoned experience in the national side.
As the Black Stars prepare for crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic on June 6 and June 10, Appiah’s reflections serve as a timely reminder of the importance of smart squad management in achieving success on the international stage.
