Europe’s elite clubs are set to clash in a revamped UEFA Champions League, promising more excitement, intensity, and unforgettable moments as the competition embarks on a new era. With a fresh league-format structure, more matches, and heightened stakes, the 2024/25 season is poised to deliver drama at every turn.

As matchday one kicks off today, September 17, Sport Blitz 360 highlights the new entrants who are set to make their mark on Europe’s biggest stage for club football.

SK Slovan Bratislava
Slovakia’s SK Slovan Bratislava is making its Champions League debut after dominating domestically with a 15-point margin at the top of the league. Known as the ‘Belasi,’ Slovan boasts 22 Slovak titles since 1926 and eight Czechoslovakian League crowns, bringing a rich tradition of winning to the European stage.

The club has European pedigree, having made multiple group-stage appearances in the UEFA Europa League and recent runs in the UEFA Europa Conference League. Their finest European moment came in 1969 when they defeated Barcelona 3-2 to claim the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Slovan will begin their inaugural Champions League campaign with a challenging trip to Scottish champions Celtic before hosting former champions Manchester City in their UCL home debut.

Girona FC
Spanish side Girona FC makes its first-ever appearance in the Champions League after a breakthrough 2023/24 La Liga season. Once overshadowed by Catalan giants Barcelona, Girona has emerged as a rising force in Spanish football.

Under Michel Sanchez, Girona surprised many by mounting a title challenge, ultimately finishing third ahead of Atletico Madrid, marking the best league finish in the club’s history. Girona will start their UCL journey away at Paris Saint-Germain before hosting 2023 Eredivisie champions Feyenoord in their first home game, ready to test themselves against Europe’s elite.

Stade Brestois 29 (Brest)
French Ligue 1 side Brest makes its historic Champions League debut following a third-place finish in the 2023/24 campaign behind PSG and Monaco. The Brittany-based club will host reigning Austrian champions Sturm Graz in their first UCL game before traveling to face RB Salzburg in Game Week 2.

With their inaugural campaigns underway, debutants like Girona, Brest, and Slovan Bratislava are set to inject unpredictability and excitement into Europe’s premier club competition. As these teams step onto the Champions League stage for the first time, they aim to defy expectations, spring surprises, and etch their names into European football history.
