Manchester City booked their place in the FIFA Club World Cup final with a commanding 3-0 victory over Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds, setting up a blockbuster showdown against Brazilian champions Fluminense.
Pep Guardiola’s side became the fourth English club to reach the Club World Cup final, following in the footsteps of Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea. Despite Urawa’s disciplined defensive display in the first half, City’s quality eventually told.
The breakthrough came on the stroke of halftime when a defensive error from Urawa centre-back Marius Hoibraten gifted City the opener, allowing the European champions to go into the break with a deserved lead.
City tightened their grip on the contest early in the second half as Mateo Kovacic doubled the advantage, capitalising on another lapse in the Urawa defence to finish calmly. Moments later, Bernardo Silva put the result beyond doubt, firing a low effort into the bottom right corner to make it 3-0 before the hour mark.
Urawa struggled to respond as City dominated possession and dictated the tempo for the remainder of the match, comfortably seeing out the victory without being seriously threatened.
In the other semi-final, Fluminense edged past Egypt’s Al Ahly with a 2-0 win to secure their place in the final. The upcoming clash will mark the 13th meeting between European and South American champions in the Club World Cup final since 2005.
With this emphatic semi-final performance, Manchester City will head into Friday’s final full of confidence as they look to lift the Club World Cup trophy for the first time and become the first English club to achieve the feat since Chelsea in 2012.
