FIFA announces inaugural Women’s Club World Cup set for 2026.

FIFA has officially confirmed that the inaugural Women’s Club World Cup will take place in January and February 2026. The tournament will feature 16 teams and is set to be held every four years, scheduled to fit within the European domestic season between the Women’s Champions League group stages and knockout rounds.

The announcement follows FIFA’s initial plans in December 2022 to create a global women’s club competition, which were formally confirmed at the recent FIFA Congress in Bangkok. The competition is expected to bring together top club sides from around the world, including current champions such as Barcelona (UEFA Women’s Champions League), NY Gotham FC (NWSL), and Corinthians (Copa Libertadores Femenina).

FIFA President Gianni Infantino highlighted the significance of the new tournament and the revamped international match calendar for 2026-2029, stating, “The women’s international match calendar and the subsequent amendments to our regulations represent an important milestone in our pledge to take the women’s game to the next level by enhancing competitiveness across the world.”

Details regarding qualification criteria and the host venue for the 2026 Women’s Club World Cup are yet to be announced. Meanwhile, FIFA is shifting focus to vote on the host for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, with Brazil competing against a joint bid from Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands.

This landmark tournament marks a major step in FIFA’s efforts to elevate women’s football globally, offering clubs and players a new platform to showcase their talent on the world stage.
