2026 World Cup: Five Key Black Stars Players Back for Mali and CAR Qualifiers

Despite the notable exclusion of Ghana captain Andre Ayew from Otto Addo’s latest Black Stars squad, several key players have returned to strengthen the team ahead of the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR). Many of these returning players had been sidelined due to injuries or a dip in form, but their inclusion brings experience and quality back to the squad.
Among the standout returns are Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey and defender Alexander Djiku, who are expected to play pivotal roles as Ghana looks to secure qualification. Here’s a closer look at the five key players back in the fold:
Thomas Partey
Thomas Partey last featured for the Black Stars in October 2023. With Andre Ayew excluded, Partey is expected to take over as team captain, bringing leadership and experience to the squad. After recovering from an injury at the start of the season, the midfielder helped Arsenal secure a Champions League spot while finishing second in the Premier League, although he featured just 14 times due to fitness issues.
Kamaldeen Sulemana
Southampton winger Kamaldeen Sulemana has also been reinstated to the team. The youngster, known for his pace and trickery, had lost his spot due to a combination of injuries and a drop in form. He last played for the Black Stars six months ago during the World Cup qualifiers against Comoros. With Southampton, Kamaldeen recorded three assists in 25 Championship matches, helping the team regain Premier League status.
Alexander Djiku
Defender Alexander Djiku last appeared for the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in January. The experienced centre-back missed recent squads due to injury but has had a strong season at Fenerbahce after moving from Strasbourg, scoring three goals in 25 matches. His presence is expected to stabilize the Black Stars’ defence for the upcoming qualifiers.
Mohammed Kudus
Midfielder Mohammed Kudus missed the last assignment due to injury but returns for the qualifiers. The 23-year-old was Ghana’s standout player at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring two vital goals despite the team’s early exit. Kudus will be central to Ghana’s plans as the four-time African champions aim to climb the Group I standings and secure their fifth World Cup appearance.
Abdul Mumin
Centre-back Abdul Mumin, who earned his first Black Stars call-up during Otto Addo’s first stint in 2022, is now available after injury ruled him out of the matches against Comoros and Madagascar. The 25-year-old has featured in 20 league games this season for Rayo Vallecano, scoring once. Mumin’s experience in defence will be crucial as Ghana aims to improve on past World Cup group-stage exits.
With these key returns, Otto Addo’s Black Stars are bolstered for the pivotal double-header against Mali on June 6 in Bamako and the CAR on June 10 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi. The squad’s blend of returning stars and emerging talent aims to ensure Ghana not only competes but secures a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
