Aston Villa celebrate Champions League comeback with commanding victory

Aston Villa marked their long-awaited return to the UEFA Champions League with a commanding 3-0 win over Young Boys in Switzerland on Tuesday, ending a four-decade absence from Europe’s elite competition on a high note.

The scoring was opened by former Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans, who slotted a precise low drive past the Young Boys goalkeeper in the 27th minute, giving Unai Emery’s side the lead. Jacob Ramsey then doubled the advantage in the 38th minute, putting Villa firmly in control and setting the tone for the remainder of the first half.

Villa thought they had added a third before halftime through Ollie Watkins, but the effort was ruled out by VAR, much to the frustration of the English side. Despite this setback, Aston Villa dominated possession in the second half, patiently looking to seal the game.

Watkins was substituted on the hour mark for Jhon Duran, who nearly extended the lead with a 78th-minute strike, only for it to be disallowed due to handball. However, goalkeeper Onana’s late finish in the 84th minute ensured Villa secured a decisive 3-0 victory, earning maximum points on their Champions League return.

With this memorable win, Aston Villa now turn their focus back to the Premier League, where they face Wolves at the weekend, buoyed by a strong European start.
